“To Tom, a Grammy-nominated musician, there was no place in the world, other than downtown NYC, that he could raise his family. Surrounding his children with the art music and culture that can only be found right here, was more important than anything. And that’s exactly what Church Street School stands for. It is a school you will only find in this incredible neighborhood that was built on art.”

About
Tom Goodkind

Tom Goodkind, (December 7th, 1953 – February 28th, 2019) was the ultimate multi-hyphenate, a Grammy-nominated musician, affordable housing activist, CPA, CFO, award winning community leader, club promoter, husband, father & CSSMA community member.

A longtime resident of Battery Park City, Tom was passionate about the tackling issues facing his neighbors and friends, and dogged in his mission to better the lives of others. This drive made him a key neighborhood leader who strove to leave his community better than he found it.

“He was a persistent, passionate advocate for housing affordability, and booster of local public schools. In service of each cause he cared about, Mr. Goodkind became known both for dogged perseverance and impish wit.” Wrote the late Robert Simko in The Broadsheet. For his work in the community Tom was given the Battery Park City Neighbor of the Year Award.

Another of Tom’s key passions was music. He spearheaded various musical ensembles during his life, the most recent being the TriBattery Pops all-volunteer community band that he founded in 2004. During the early 1980’s Tom also co-founded The Washington Squares, a neo-beatnik folk revival group consisting of band members: Bruce Jay Paskow, Tom Goodkind, and Lauren Agnelli.

Tom also played a part in the creation and management of a few legendary NYC music venues including Irving Plaza, the Peppermint Lounge, and Roseland.

Tom was a huge part of the Church Street School community for 30 years and is said to have found some of his inspiration for community organizing in the halls of CSSMA’s original location on Church Street. Through this scholarship fund, we hope to pass on Tom Goodkind's legacy of passion for his community, his neighborhood, and his neighbors, and his lifelong participation in and support of the arts to the next generation!

“CSSMA, to Tom, was a fundamental part of raising a family in Tribeca." Said Jill Goodkind, Tom's wife. "The friendships he made in those early days, bringing his (now 32 year old) toddler to classes, helped to grow his commitment to lower Manhattan. Tom gained a sense of community in the ever changing landscapes of Tribeca, and would go on to become a leader in that community.”
