Letter from the Executive Director

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Families and Friends,

My name is Dr. Chrissie Placilla and I am the Executive Director of Church Street School for Music and Art (CSSMA). This year we are shining a light on the power of the creative pathways in our programming. Through our classes and lessons, students are guided to find their unique artistic voices, and discover the therapeutic benefits of making music and art.

At Church Street School, it is possible to begin creating with us at 6 months old and continue through your adult years. Our programs enable students to continuously learn and grow through art and music by moving from one class or lesson to the next, continuously curating a rich tapestry of experiences and growing a multi-generational creative community.

Dr. Christina Placilla,

CSSMA Executive Director

We have launched multiple new programs this year at CSSMA including: The Tribeca Jazz Institute Vocal Program, Chamber Music Programs for Teens and Adults, and The Space Between, our monthly adult poetry reading nights.  Enrollment in the Tribeca Jazz Institute has increased by 30% and both our adult choir and our Band Factory programs have more than doubled in size. We have also created a path for students with special needs to participate in Band Factory and adult chamber music programs, making ensembles a possibility for all our students.

In the past year, Church Street School has increased our presence in the Downtown community by launching partnerships with Peck Slip Park, Washington Square Park Conservancy, SWAN Chinese American School, Pine Street School, and IS289 where we have just launched our first middle school orchestra program. Additionally, we continued our partnerships with PS 234, Battery Park City Authority, Imogen Foundation, City Hall Park, Bogardus Plaza, Duane Park, and the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation in the South Bronx.

We are excited to be growing in new directions, while still remaining a central artistic community resource for over 850 people in Lower Manhattan. It is through the care our teachers who work directly with our students and the vision of leadership that we are able to continue to provide scholarships of over $158,000, making art and music accessible to people from all walks of life. Together as a community, we create a safe space where everyone is an artist and expression thrives.

I am humbled to be leading Church Street School into the future and encourage you to keep reading to learn more about the past year at CSSMA, and our vision of what’s to come.

Sincerely,

"One of the features that's been fantastic about Church Street School is that it has [taken] my 5 year old son, plucking one note at a time on a kids guitar, through years of private lessons, to the moment when he said 'I want an electric guitar'. As he grew older, he dipped into [Band Factory], with kids his age playing songs they like with phenomenal teachers. I actually got inspired [...] it's been the joy of my last three years to be here myself, taking lessons.

"I fell in love with teaching at [Church Street School]. I fell in love with it because of the people, and the kids, the laughs we would have [...]. To me, it is one of the greatest accomplishments of humanity, the legacy of music from our ancestors to present day. I think it is a noble cause to keep handing down to future generations."

Phil Stewart, CSSMA Faculty Member & Band Factory Coordinator

FY25 Program Spotlight

FY25 Program Spotlight

Trailer for Church Street School's episode of 'Cookie Monster Bake Sale'.  View the full episode on HBO Max.

In 2025, Church Street School for Music & Art was featured in the Sesame Street special Cookie Monster Bake Sale: Block Party. Hosted by actress Yvette Nicole Brown and Cookie Monster, the episode follows Church Street School students and staff as they take part in a dessert-decorating obstacle course to raise funds for new art supplies. The special is currently available to stream on HBO Max.

The episode also shines a spotlight on one of Church Street School’s signature community events, The Happening, our annual free neighborhood block party. Through behind-the-scenes interviews and highlights from last year’s celebration, viewers are introduced to this beloved Downtown tradition and the vibrant creative community it brings together each summer.

This national television feature significantly expanded Church Street School’s visibility, introducing our mission and programs to audiences in New York City and across the country. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Sesame Workshop and look forward to future collaborations that celebrate and amplify the impact of our community.

FY25 marked an exciting milestone for Church Street School’s flagship group instrumental music program, Band Factory, with the launch of adult ensembles. Parents, faculty, and other adult members of the school community embraced the opportunity to make music together, leading to the formation of three new bands, with additional ensembles expected to form in the coming year. This strong interest and participation position Band Factory for continued growth in FY26.

A cornerstone of Church Street School for many years, Band Factory is designed for students ages eight and older with basic to advanced instrumental skills. The program offers participants of all ages the opportunity to experience the rewards and discipline of making and performing music as part of an ensemble. Along the way, students develop musical proficiency while strengthening collaboration, communication,

confidence, and other essential social-emotional skills.

Under the leadership of Band Factory Coordinator Phil Stewart and our experienced faculty, participants rehearse weekly, compose original music, and perform at school and community events throughout the year. Through these collaborative experiences, Band Factory continues to foster creativity, teamwork, and a lifelong love of music—bringing generations of musicians together through the power of music.

Church Street School further expanded its adult music offerings with the launch of Adult Chamber Music Groups, creating new opportunities for amateur musicians to learn, collaborate, and perform together. Open to adults of all experience levels, the program provides a welcoming environment where participants can strengthen their musicianship, explore their creativity, and build meaningful connections with fellow music enthusiasts under the guidance of experienced teaching artists.

Led by Chamber Music Coordinator Joshua Hunton, Adult Chamber Music Groups builds on the success of Church Street School’s existing chamber music initiatives, including the monthly Adult Chamber Music and Chamber Orchestra Reading Parties and the annual Amateur Adult Chamber Music Workshop. Together, these programs meet the growing need for accessible, community-based ensemble experiences for adult amateur musicians, supporting artistic growth while fostering lasting connections through the shared joy of making music.

Church Street School's Vision for the Future

Church Street School's Vision for the Future

For 34 years, Church Street School for Music and Art (CSSMA) has been a bright spot for community, creativity, and artistic expression in downtown New York City. Since its founding, CSSMA has been committed to creating an open, supportive, and safe space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can explore their creativity, develop their artistic skills, and discover their own authentic forms of expression—from children as young as 16 months to adults 80 and beyond. Guided by a world-renowned faculty of dedicated teaching artists, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to create.

At CSSMA, we meet each student where they are and work alongside them to discover the creative pathway that is right for them. We build the scaffolding that supports meaningful growth, nurture the creative process, and provide the context, materials, and encouragement that allow students to take what they learn in classes and lesson an carry it into workshops, performances, and the wider world. Our vision for the future is to make these creative pathways accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances or ability, while expanding our reach far beyond our home on White Street.

Access and inclusion are at the heart of this vision. In FY25 alone, CSSMA provided more than $158,000 in scholarships, helping ensure that financial barriers do not prevent students from participating. We are equally committed to a robust roster of low- and no-cost programs and community events for all ages, including our monthly Tribeca Jazz Institute Jam Sessions, concerts in local green spaces, free adult and children’s choirs, and much more.

We are also building a broader creative community through partnerships with organizations including the Perelman Performing Arts Center, Sesame Workshop, Associated Chamber Music Players, and local public schools. These collaborations allow us to bring the transformative power of music and art to new audiences and communities—and we look forward to deepening these relationships and forging many more in the years ahead.

Our vision is ambitious: a future in which every person who wants to explore their creativity can find a welcoming place, the resources, and the encouragement to do so. A future in which disability, financial need, age, or background never stands in the way of creative expression. And a future in which the impact of Church Street School extends throughout New York City and beyond.

This work is only possible because of our generous donors, trustees, and supporters. Their belief in CSSMA helps us build truly inclusive creative pathways, sustain our community, and open doors for the next generation of artists, musicians, and creative citizens.

We invite you to help us imagine—and build—that future together.
