
John Lang

Bassist John Lang offers a distinguished resume in performance, arranging and composition.
Lang is most recognized in New York as a straight-ahead bassist. He can be seen weekly
performing in clubs such as Cellar Dog, Little Branch, Ornithology, The Django, The Ivy Room,
The Jazz Forum, Midnight Blue, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, and Winnie’s Jazz Bar. John has
appeared as a sideman with saxophone greats Grant Stewart and Chris Byars and pianist Rick Germanson and David Janeway.
January 2026 saw John named as the first Administrative Director for the Barry Harris
Institute of Jazz. Mr. Lang is justifiably thrilled to be involved in the protecting, preserving,
and promulgating the musical compositions, teachings, and musical legacy of Barry Harris.
In May 2026 Mr. Lang entered the world-famous Sear Sound in midtown Manhattan to record
his second “Earotica” album for Cellar Live Music. Earotica’s first album received much
national radio play and this follow-up record promises much of the same from the All-Star
music ensemble. The band features of “who’s who” of modern jazz with Alex Norris on
Trumpet, Dan Block on Tenor, John Mosca on Trombone and Steve Einerson on Piano and
many others.
2025 began with Mr. Lang leading “Finger Poppin” a band playing the music of Horace Silver. This ensemble is dedicated to keeping the wonderful jazz compositions of Horace Silver alive for today’s jazz audiences. Finger Poppin has appeared at Ornithology, Winnie’s Jazz Bar, Smalls, Brush Culture, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, One Flight Up.
Mr. Lang’s is also a co-leader of “Full House” the Wes Montgomery Legacy with guitarist Tom
Dempsey. The bands forthcoming performances will include all new, dynamic arrangements
penned by John to bring out the utter brilliance of Wes Montgomery playing and writing.
In the Fall of 2023 John was accepted into the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, the most
prestigious writers group in the genre.
Lang has recorded and arranged for many Broadway singers including Natalie Toro and Rita
Harvey, as well as for the cast recordings of Fat Camp and the Adventures of Flat Stanley.
In 2025 Mr. Lang was asked to join the faculty of The Church Street School of Music and Art.
He currently teaches private lessons and band classes for the school.
Mr. Lang received a master’s in jazz performance from SUNY Purchase in May 2022, under
the tutelage of David Wong. Lang resides in the Hudson River Valley, just north of New York City, with his son Milo.
