Artist’s Statement: In the late Sixties I was fascinated by drypoint and etching. They both resemble a drawing line but each has its own special quality, what I like to call “Promise” and “Permanence”. I’ve wanted to learn these techniques, but they were not available where I lived at the time. I attempted to teach myself by making a deep mark on masonite, then filling it with ink and printing it on dry paper. I brought this set of prints to New York City; Professor Eichenberg gave me the name for this technique; “Masonite Intaglio”. One year later Pratt Graphics Art Center commissioned two editions; one for Membership Prints (Lesson of Three Parts) and one for The Asia Portfolio (Third Night after Dark Moon), which were both printed using this technique. In New York I tried to learn most of the mediums in printmaking: Engraving, (Engraving I, II,) etching, serigraphy, and lithography. The year I learned lithography was like a love affair; I remembered working at the litho press throughout the night. When the security guard came to check on me at 8 am, I went home to sleep. (Mettaa I, II, Karunaa, and Portrait of . . .) I’ve made editions of these aforementioned early works that were made during my studies at Pratt Institute in the early Seventies. The theme I was preocuppied with was of a “peculiar form”. They are obscure and invite questions of the states of the unknown. Director's Welcome • News • Contact CSS |
