Steinway Piano Fund

Church Street School for Music and Art was recently offered a unique and extraordinary opportunity to acquire a wonderful, and historic, concert grand piano for its performances and recitals.

But we need your help to pay for it!

The piano is a 7-foot Steinway with ivory keys, which was originally built in 1893 and was rebuilt in the last ten years. Two independent piano experts have certified the piano to be in excellent condition. The piano belonged to Igor Buketoff, a well-known orchestral composer who conducted the NY Philharmonic and was on the faculty of Julliard. Mr. Buketoff is best known for his arrangement of the 1812 Overture (the very popular version with the cannons and other colorful effects that we all know) and the posthumous orchestration of Rachmaninoff's final opera. The school also hopes to acquire a series of wonderful photographs of Mr. Buketoff with Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Kabalevsky, Eugene Ormandy, and others.

Pianos of this caliber are valued at $50,000 but Church Street School had the opportunity for a limited time to purchase it from Mr. Buketoff's estate for $25,000. Click here to read a copy of a letter from Mr. Buketoff's daughter, recounting the story of the piano, and why she wanted it to come to the school as a legacy for her father.

Church Street School for Music and Art - the only school of its kind in Lower Manhattan - is a not-for-profit organization, and all gifts are fully tax-deductible. Specializing in educational programs in the arts for children, the school has served families in Lower Manhattan for almost 15 years. The acquisition of Mr. Buketoff's piano not only enhances musical instruction at Church Street School, but also preserves an historic instrument for future generations to enjoy.

We hope you agree with us that this was an opportunity that could not be passed up – and that you will help support this purchase with a generous contribution.

Ceramic Tile Wall of Fame

Since 1996, Church Street School has been holding an annual fundraising drive each fall to help raise money for program support. As part of this annual fall drive, your donation of $100 makes possible your participation in our "Wall of Fame"; you will be invited to paint your own ceramic tile to add to our collection. Ceramic tile painting workshops are held periodically throughout the year. In our school lobby, you will see many ceramic tiles created over the years by Church Street School students and their families, and your donation of $100 entitles you to a place!

Geraldine Neff Anderson Piano Scholarship Fund

Geraldine Neff Anderson believed in the power and beauty of music. She played the piano from the time she was a young girl until she was well into her 90's. Her father recognized her musical talents early on and made sure that she always had a piano to play. This is quite remarkable, because Geraldine's father was a “homesteader” and moved his family to a log cabin in Montana from 1910 until 1920. Geraldine not only had a piano to play in the family's log cabin on the prairie in Montana, but she rode a horse five miles to take her piano lessons every week. When Geraldine returned to Pennsylvania in 1920 in her teens, she began playing improvised piano accompaniment for silent movies in her home town.

Geraldine Neff Anderson was grandmother to Lisa Ecklund-Flores, Church Street School for Music and Art's director and founder. Lisa shared her love for music with her grandmother until her death in March 2005. As a legacy to this musical heritage, Lisa has created a scholarship fund in her grandmother's name.

Dedicated to supporting the musical education of young pianists, the Geraldine Neff Anderson Scholarship Fund will offer financial support for instrumental lessons based on economic need and musical ability. Church Street School for Music and Art is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, and donations made to the Geraldine Neff Anderson Scholarship Fund are 100% tax-deductible.
